While roller-compacted concrete technology could have still been considered a new technology in 2003, it is now true to say that construction by roller-compaction has become the standard approach for large concrete gravity dams. This Bulletin addresses all aspects of the planning, design, construction and performance of RCC in dams. A roller compacted concrete (RCC) dam is formed from inverted T-shape face panels to produce a lower sloped profile and L-shape face panel to produce an upper vertical profile. The face panels have the more attractive features of concrete and asphalt paving. The idea of placing and compacting a zero-slump concrete mixture in lifts originated in the early 1970s for use in mass concrete structures. Almost O. 5 million yd' of roller-compacted concrete (RCC) was placed in both the Tar be la Dam, Pak is tan, in The original 2003 ICOLD Bulletin 126 on Roller Compacted Concrete dams proved to be the most successful ICOLD bulletin to date, with the highest number of copies published and being translated into more languages than any previous ICOLD bulletin. Over the past decade or so, the number of RCC dams in the world has essentially doubled, with approximately 700 now completed, or under construction. The concept of roller compacted cement (RCC) which is a lean concrete (less cementitious material) and can be placed and compacted by using earth moving equipments which are generally used in embankment dam construction, was used for construction of concrete gravity dam for the first time on Shimajigawa Dam in Japan in 1978. The dam types considered are RCCD (Roller Compacted Concrete dams) and CFRD (Concrete Faced Rock-fill Dams). 1.2 Purpose The main purposes of this project is to gather and provide information, knowledge and experiences about RCCD and CFRD dam types, compare them to each other and MC90(1990): CEB-FIB Model Code 1990; Comité Euro-InternationalduBéton: Lausanne, Switzerland, 1990. 22. After passing these years, it's become one of the popular methods in designing dams and called Roller Compacted Concrete. No slump is the specific property of the concrete of RCC dams. The Enlarged Cotter Dam is a new 85m high RCC dam currently under construction in Canberra, Australia. It will be Australia's highest RCC dam. The closest available source of aggregate for the dam's construction was a Rhyolite that does not meet the Australian Standard for conventional concrete aggregates (AS2758.1). 6TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ROLLER COMPACTED CONCRETE (RCC) DAMS Zaragoza, 23 - 25 October 2012 THERMAL INDUCED CRACKING PERFORMANCE OF RCC DAMS Kenneth D HANSEN Consulting Engineer, USA; ken@ken-hansen.com Brian A FORBES Manager, Major Dams Projects, GHD Pty Ltd, Austral
