Mary Zimmerman's adaptation of Argonautikacontinues this tradition of carefully selecting which pieces of a Greek story to emphasize, where to begin and end the story, and which characters to feature. Her version focuses on Jason and Medea and begins with an invocation by the chorus that summarizes the story of Helle and Phrixus. 2 and respond to the so-called 'closed texts' of the classical canon. I am interested in looking at what happens after the Odyssey - in particular, how the reception and characterisation of Penelope in Margaret Atwood's 2005 novel, The Penelopiad, is affected by Atwood's awareness of the Odyssey's status as a canonical, closed, received text. Mary Zimmerman loved to read. Among the many classics she read at a young age were The Odyssey and Edith Hamilton's Mythology. These stories and mythology brought her to this conclu-sion: "what these myths are really about…is that life equals change, it equals loss. And you have to embrace it. From this transformation onward, Zimmerman allows the woman perspectives and escapades drive the show. Athena acts the spokesperson for Oddyseus' adventures, rising beyond him in plot importance. Mary Alice Zimmerman was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, the daughter of two University of Nebraska professors. She moved to Chicago to pursue her education, and has received her Bachelor of The Odyssey, The Secret in the Wings, and Arabian Nights.
