If you don't get a man page for pdftk, then install it. 1 sudo aptitude install pdftk If you don't get a man page for pdftotext, then install the Poppler Utilities with the following command. This package includes a number of useful tools. The apropos command shows all of the tools that we now have at our disposal for manipulating PDF files. 1 2 $ pdfimages -j foo.pdf bar Extract JPEG images from a PDF document This will extract all DCT format images from foo.pdf and save them in JPEG format (option -j) to bar-000.jpg, bar-001.jpg, bar-002.jpg, etc. ----------------------------- pdfimages (1) pdfimages (1) NAME pdfimages - Portable Document Format (PDF) image extractor (version 3.00) Installation. On a Debian- and Ubuntu-based systems, img2pdf can be installed from the official repositories: $ apt install img2pdf If you want to install it using pip, you can run: $ pdfimages -all img2pdf.pdf tmp $ compare -metric AE original.jpg tmp-000.jpg null: 0 $ pdfimages -all imagemagick.pdf tmp $ compare -metric AE original.jpg Pdfimages saves images from a Portable Document Format (PDF) file as Portable Pixmap (PPM), Portable Bitmap (PBM), or JPEG files. Pdfimages reads the PDF file, scans one or more pages, PDF-file, and writes one PPM, PBM, or JPEG file for each image, image-root-nnn.xxx, where nnn is the image number and xxx is the image type (.ppm, .pbm, .jpg). It first tries to find the user's private config file, ~/.xpdfrc. If that doesn't exist, it looks for a system-wide config file, /etc/xpdf/xpdfrc. See the xpdfrc (5) man page for details. OPTIONS Many of the following options can be set with configuration file commands. Good command--use this instead: # GOOD cmd pdftoppm -jpeg -r 300 input.pdf output. The -jpeg sets the output image format to JPG, -r 300 sets the output image resolution to 300 DPI, and the word output will be the prefix to all pages of images, which will be numbered and placed into your current directory you are working in. Update: As you pointed out, gscan2pdf (the way you're using it) is just a wrapper for pdfimages (from poppler ). pdfimages does not do the same thing that convert does when given a PDF as input. convert takes the PDF, renders it at some resolution, and uses the resulting bitmap as the source image. pdftoppm (1) [centos man page] Pdftoppm converts Portable Document Format (PDF) files to color image files in Portable Pixmap (PPM) format, grayscale image files in Por- table Graymap (PGM) format, or monochrome image files in Portable Bitmap (PBM) format. Pdftoppm reads the PDF file, PDF-file, and writes one PPM file for each page, PPM-root DESCRIPTION. Pdftops converts Portable Document Format (PDF) files to PostScript so they can be printed. Pdftops reads the PDF file, PDF-file, and writes a PostScript file, PS-file. If PS-file is not specified, pdftops converts file.pdf to file.ps (or file.eps with the −eps option). If PS-file is ´-', the PostScript is sent to stdout. Rearrange the order of the pages by selecting (using Shift + Click and Ctrl + Click to select multiples), and drag 'n' drop them to their desired location in the Document. The same goes for removing pages; Select, then press delete. When you are done, simply save your document as a new PDF file. pdfseparate and pdfunite Pdfimages reads the PDF file PDF-file, scans one or more pages, and writes one PPM, PBM, or JPEG file for each image, image-root-nnn.xxx, where nnn is the image number and xxx is the image type (.ppm,
