to believe that Neural Darwinism represents Edelman's most important legacy and that it will endure as a classic. As Edelman himself liked to say, other scientists would have fig-ured out antibodies and CAMs soon enough, but perhaps not neural Darwinism. And he showed where his passion lay, thinking about "how the brain works" for 35 years, a challenge he felt truly matched his intellec Gerald M. Neural Darwinism: The theory of neuronal group selection By Gerald M. Edelman. 1987, New York: Basic Books. 371 pp. $29.95. Neuroscientists will have a difficult time ignoring the publication of Neural Darwinism, Gerald Edelman's ex position of his theory of neuronal group selection. Lav ish brochures were sent to members of such groups as Neural Darwinism ranges over many disciplines, focusing on key problems in developmental and evolutionary biology, anatomy, physiology, ethology, and psychology. This book should therefore prove indispensable to advanced undergraduate and graduate students in these fields, to students of medicine, and to those in the social sciences concerned with the relation of behavior to biology. Beyond Edelman's 1987 book Neural Darwinism[2] introduced the public to the Theory of Neuronal Group Selection (TNGS) - which is the core theory underlying Edelman's explanation of global brain function. Owing to the book title, TNGS is most commonly referred to as the Theory of Neural Darwinism, although TNGS has roots going back to Edelman and Mountcastle's 1978 book, The Mindful Brain Edelman subsequently became known for his theory of neuronal group selection (or Neural Darwinism), of which we will provide only a very general overview here (see the linked modules for details). This theory too is based on a selective process, but in this case one that accounts for the development and functioning of the human nervous system. This nervous system comprises nearly neurons, each Neural Darwinism (ND), 1 a large scale theory of brain function, was proposed initially in 1978 (Edelman, 1978), and has since been developed extensively and hypothesized to relate to consciousness (Edelman, 1987, Edelman, 1989, Edelman, 1993, Edelman, 2003, Edelman, 2004, Edelman and Tononi, 2000, Tononi and Edelman, 1998).Here we attempt a thorough analysis of the degree to which that claim Neural Darwinism: Selection and Reentrant Signaling in Higher Brain Function - Review Gerald M.
